March of Giants Brother Light

March of Giants Brother Light explained: the flock-based Giant, his shield build path, his counters and the community feedback on his ultimate in the playtest.

Brother Light is a March of Giants character built around a flock of followers, which makes troop management the heart of his kit rather than a side mechanic. Community testing describes him as fun, durable and unique, but also flags a weak ultimate and a serious vulnerability to area damage. The details below come from player feedback and Giant coverage rather than from an official kit page, so balance specifics are marked accordingly.

Who Brother Light is

Brother Light is a Giant whose entire kit plays off his faithful. His followers are not decoration: they scale his damage, they enable his abilities, and they decide how much impact his ultimate has. If the flock dies, the character's output drops with it.

That design makes him a troop-management character first and a damage character second. Testers describe his W ability as especially strong because it keeps your wave alive and counters enemy charges, and because correct timing lets you chain charges with a backup wave to build real lane pressure.

The thematic direction that players keep asking for is the Flock itself. One widely upvoted suggestion is that he should convert a number of followers into a Templar Knight-style super unit, and that his flock should not be deletable instantly so his abilities keep scaling during a fight.

His strongest build path: shields

Shield stacking is repeatedly named as one of his best build directions. Alpha testing feedback described an early shield purchase as a solid power spike that scales into a late-game item equivalent, and one tester reported reaching roughly 13,000 HP in a match with about 10,000 of that as shields.

That number comes from a single player's testing notes during the Closed Alpha period and may not reflect the current Pioneer Playtest build, so treat it as 待确认 rather than a target. What is consistent across feedback is the shape of the build: cheap early shields, then scaling into survivability while your followers do the work.

The tradeoff is that shield builds make him durable rather than threatening. If you want kill pressure you generally need to convert that survivability into tempo by pushing waves and taking objectives, not by hunting Giants alone.

Counters and bad matchups

Area clear is his hardest counter. Victoria's flamethrower is described as brutal against him because it wipes his flock instantly, and because his damage and ultimate impact both depend on those followers being alive.

Against area-damage Giants, testers recommend playing safe, farming and coming online in the mid game rather than forcing early fights. That is standard advice for a scaling character, but it matters more for Brother Light because losing his followers removes his scaling as well as his safety.

Crowd control is the second problem. Community feedback from the same testing round described Giants as slow and heavy, with crowd-control chains feeling oppressive once you are caught. Brother Light has no special answer to that, so positioning ahead of the fight matters more than reaction speed.

The ultimate controversy

His ultimate drew the most criticism in alpha feedback. Testers described the heal as low relative to health pools measured in thousands, the slow as short and weak, and the overall result as something used mainly to disengage or extend a chase rather than to win a fight.

The suggested fixes in that feedback were direct: give the ultimate damage, stronger crowd control, or debuffs such as weaken, disarm or a morale break. The alternative suggestion was to make it visibly empower his followers instead, so the ultimate scales with the flock theme.

Whether any of those changes have landed in the Pioneer Playtest is 待确认. If you are playing him now, judge the ultimate on the live build rather than on these notes, because they date from the Closed Alpha testing period.

How to play him today

Start with wave management. Keep the flock alive before you look for damage, use your W to hold the wave and counter charges, and treat every fight as a trade of followers rather than a trade of health bars.

Build toward durability with shield items and pick fights near your own Soldiers, where your followers can join immediately. Avoid open ground against area damage, and avoid fighting Victoria in a narrow lane where a single flamethrower cast can delete your whole wave.

On the map, convert his durability into space. Brother Light is at his best when he can hold a lane, absorb pressure and let teammates take an objective elsewhere, rather than when he is asked to be the team's primary damage dealer.

待确认 items

His full ability list, cooldowns and upgrade paths are not published officially. The reported 13,000 HP shield build comes from individual testing and is not a confirmed benchmark. Whether his ultimate has been buffed since the Closed Alpha is unknown, and his placement in any tier list should be treated as provisional while the build changes.

It is also 待确认 whether he is playable in the current Pioneer Playtest at all, since he appears in community and feedback material rather than in Ubisoft's confirmed playtest roster list of Victoria, Wolfgang, Voidmaster, Strykka, Kragg, Oriane, Iron Sister, Trench Maw and Ossuary.

Soldier-focused Giants and the flock

Brother Light is not the only Giant whose power depends on followers, and the mechanics that interact with those followers are where his matchups are decided. The official site confirms that Giants lead Soldiers with distinct strengths, with different Giants bringing different soldier types rather than a shared template.

Solace is the clearest mechanical threat. The developer-narrated premiere showed his spell converting enemy soldiers into friendly ones, which is the most direct counter a flock-based Giant can face, since it attacks the resource his kit scales from rather than his health bar.

Other Giants show how differently soldiers can be built. Wolfgang's forces are werewolves, described as much faster and deadlier, while Ossuary commands ghosts that pass through walls to snipe from unexpected angles. All three examples matter when you are deciding whether Brother Light's followers will survive a fight.

Because Brother Light's numbers are not published officially, how these interactions actually resolve in the current build is 待确认 and worth testing directly.
