March of Giants Gameplay

March of Giants gameplay explained: the free-to-play 4v4 war MOBA where you command a Giant, rally Soldiers, deploy Battleworks and break Bastions.

March of Giants gameplay is a free-to-play 4v4 war MOBA in which you command a towering Giant while also directing the Soldiers and Battleworks around it. You are not playing a lone hero with a health bar; you are playing a small army with a flagship unit. The mode is built around pushing lanes, capturing ground and breaking structures, and the fastest way to understand it is to look at the three layers you are actually controlling.

What you control in a match

Every match gives you one Giant and a stream of Soldiers. Your Giant is the power unit with unique abilities, and the Soldiers are the army that makes those abilities matter. The official description is blunt about the split: you "play as a towering Giant, rally hundreds of Soldiers, and deploy Battleworks that turn familiar lanes into shifting front lines."

Soldiers are not cosmetic. They scout ahead, gather resources, attack enemy Giants and absorb damage while your Giant repositions. A Giant fighting with a soldier wave behind it wins fights that the same Giant loses alone, which is why the game is described as leading an army rather than piloting a character.

Battleworks are the third layer and the one that changes the map. Trenches, bunkers, soldier drops and heavy units such as the Ironclad are deployed into lanes to create choke points, reinforce objectives and lock down progress you have already made.

Objectives: Bastions, lanes and capture points

The win condition in March of Giants is structural. According to Ubisoft's own Pioneer Playtest briefing, each team defends three Bastions and wins by destroying two of the opponent's three while keeping its own line intact. That single rule explains almost every decision in the game.

Because you only need two of three Bastions, splitting pressure across two lanes is usually stronger than stacking one lane. It also means a lost lane is not automatically a lost match, which is why rotations after a capture matter more than chasing a kill.

Capture points and outposts sit between the lanes. Taking them converts a won fight into map control, and map control is what lets your Soldiers walk into enemy territory without being cut off. The official trailer summary lists the same verbs the game expects you to chain together: capture objectives, convert soldiers, breach bastions.

The official gameplay trailer (October 2, 2026)

The Official Gameplay Trailer published on October 2, 2026 is the clearest single look at the game. IGN's write-up frames it as a free-to-play 4v4 MOBA where "you lead an army, not just a hero," and shows objectives being captured, Soldiers being converted and Bastions being breached.

The trailer also confirms the platform and the test window: March of Giants is being built for PC, and the Pioneer Playtest runs on Steam from October 7 to October 18, 2026.

Shorter companion videos exist for individual Giants, including an Official Solace ability trailer and character spotlights for Victoria, Ossuary, Voidmaster, Wolfgang, Kragg and others, which are useful for seeing how a specific kit plays before you commit to it.

Is it a MOBA or an RTS?

The most common question around the game is its genre label. The Official Gameplay Trailer was posted to r/RealTimeStrategy as a "New Free 4vs4 MOBA hybrid with RTS elements," and the comment section immediately argued about the second half of that sentence.

One community summary is that there are "little to no RTS elements" and that it is a MOBA whose unique twist is that your hero carries troops you can use offensively or defensively. Another commenter argues the opposite: that it is "absolutely a strategy MOBA" with far more strategic depth than League of Legends or Dota 2.

A player who was in the earlier alpha build, when the project was being made by Amazon, said most testers came from other MOBAs and ignored structures, while playing it like an RTS with a defensive focus was extremely effective. That gap between how MOBA players and strategy players approach the same systems is exactly where the game's identity sits.

How the community says it plays

Community impressions from the gameplay trailer thread are useful because they describe match feel rather than marketing copy. The building system is described as simple to execute but strategically deep in positioning. Soldiers and lane management are described as the difference between playing it like a standard MOBA and playing it like a strategy game.

The same thread raises the obvious risk: a game with this many layers may be "too much to manage for the average gamer," and veterans compared it to older hybrid experiments such as Demigod. That criticism is a fair thing to know before you invest time, and it is the main reason the official onboarding material focuses on the Soldier system first.

There is no verified ranked mode, match length or map count published for the playtest, so treat any specific number you see outside official channels as 待确认.

How to try it now

The Pioneer Playtest is free and live on Steam from October 7 to October 18, 2026, open to players in North America and Europe. Access is by invitation selection rather than an open download: if you are selected you receive a Steam notification email and the build appears in your library.

You will need an Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect installed to play, even though the download itself comes through Steam. The playtest ends on October 18, so gameplay impressions gathered now come from a live build rather than a finished release.

Early Access is planned for Summer 2027 and no final release date has been announced; IGN still lists the initial release as to be announced. Treat that as 待确认 until Ubisoft confirms a date.
