A March of Giants guide to the Pioneer Playtest: how to get in, which Giants are live, how Bastions work and what to learn before your first match.

This March of Giants guide answers the practical question first: the game is currently a free-to-play 4v4 war MOBA, and the way to play it today is the Pioneer Playtest on Steam, running October 7 to 18, 2026 for players in North America and Europe. Below is how to get access, what the match actually asks of you, and which systems to learn first so your opening games are not wasted.

How to get into the Pioneer Playtest

Access is not an open download. You sign up through the March of Giants Steam page, and if you are selected you receive a notification email from Steam and the build then appears directly in your library. There is no code to redeem, which is why this site lists no redeem codes.

You will need two things installed before you can play: a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect. The client is delivered through Steam, but the account layer is Ubisoft's, and that mismatch catches people out on day one. Sorting both out before the test window is the single most useful piece of preparation.

The playtest opened on October 7 at 10 AM EDT and closes on October 18. Because access is limited to North America and Europe, players elsewhere may see the store page without an invitation option; that restriction is regional, not a bug.

What the match asks of you

March of Giants is a 4v4 MOBA built around leading troops rather than piloting a lone hero. Ubisoft describes the core loop as playing a powerful Giant who leads troops into battle while coordinating with three teammates, with the goal of destroying two of your opponent's three Bastions while defending your own.

That two-of-three win condition is the most important sentence in the game. It means you do not need to win every lane, and it rewards splitting pressure across two Bastions instead of throwing everything into one fight. Teams that understand this rotate after a capture; teams that do not chase kills and lose the map.

Between the lanes sit capture objectives. Holding them is how a won fight turns into territory, and territory is what lets your Soldier waves walk forward without being cut off. If a fight does not lead to an objective or a Bastion, it is not a fight worth taking.

The Giants available in the Pioneer Playtest

Ubisoft's playtest briefing lists the active Giants and frames them as creatures of wartime Dreams and Nightmares, each with a distinct battlefield role. The confirmed playtest roster includes Victoria, the Dream of Victory; Wolfgang, the Nightmare of Rage; Voidmaster, the Nightmare of the Occult; Strykka, the Nightmare of Agony; Kragg, the Nightmare of Strength; Oriane, the Dream of Peace; Iron Sister, the Dream of the War Effort; Trench Maw, the Nightmare of the Battlefield; and Ossuary, the Nightmare of the Fallen.

Community coverage of the same build adds Elaris, Solace, Flint and Goliath to the playable list. Elaris was specifically confirmed as available to all players in the Pioneer Playtest, after players asked whether the character would be included. Because the roster is still being revealed in Giant Spotlight posts, treat any list beyond the official one as 待确认 as the build changes.

The practical takeaway for a first session is to pick one archetype rather than sampling everything. Victoria and Oriane are described as precision-damage characters, Wolfgang and Trench Maw as aggressive frontline, and Iron Sister and Kragg as space control.

Learn Soldiers before you learn builds

New players lose games by treating Soldiers as scenery. Soldiers scout, gather, attack enemy Giants and break defensive shields, and a Giant with a wave behind it wins exchanges it cannot win alone. Before you worry about builds, learn to push your wave before you trade and to back off when the wave is dead.

Battleworks are the second habit. Trenches, bunkers, soldier drops and heavy units such as the Ironclad are deployed into a lane to create choke points and hold ground you have already taken. Positioning them is described by community veterans as simple to execute but strategically deep, which makes them a good early focus.

Only after those two layers feel natural should you think about ability upgrades and Arsenal spending. That ordering is deliberate: the build system rewards players who already understand which fights they should be taking.

What the community warns about

The most repeated warning on the gameplay trailer thread is complexity. One commenter argues the game "might be too much to manage for the average gamer," and compares it to older hybrid experiments that never found a large audience. Others counter that it is a genuinely strategic MOBA with more depth than League of Legends or Dota 2.

Veterans of the earlier alpha build, when the project was still being made by Amazon, report that most testers came from other MOBAs and ignored structures entirely, while a defensive, structure-first playstyle overperformed. Expect the playtest meta to be unsettled and expect most of your opponents to under-use the army layer.

Match length, map count and ranked structure are not confirmed by official sources for this build and should be marked 待确认 until Ubisoft publishes them.

What is confirmed versus 待确认

Confirmed: free-to-play, PC via Steam, 4v4, three Bastions per side with two needed to win, the Pioneer Playtest window of October 7 to 18, 2026, the North America and Europe region limit, and the Ubisoft account requirement. Also confirmed is Early Access planned for Summer 2027 with no final date announced.

待确认: the full launch roster, whether any progression carries into Early Access, exact match length targets, and the release date. IGN credits Amazon Games Montreal as the studio while Ubisoft publishes the official game pages and news, so the studio attribution is worth treating carefully until it is stated plainly on one page.
